New page

Pontikonisi (Greek Ποντικονήσι meaning "mouse island"), is a small and very green tiny island, off the coast of Corfu, with abundant trees.

Its highest natural elevation (excluding its trees or man-made structures, such as the monastery), stands at about 2m.

Pontikonisi is home of the monastery of Pantokrator (Μοναστήρι του Παντοκράτορος) dating from the 13th century. Some say that the white stone staircase of the monastery that when viewed from afar gives the impression of a mouse tail gave the island its name, while others claim that it is merely due to its tiny size.

Mythology has it that the island is the petrified ship that took Odysseus to Ithaca. On its return, the god Poseidon turned it into stone.
