'''Spyros Melas''' was a [[Greeks|Greek]] writer and member of the [[Academy of Athens]].

Melas was born in [[Nafpaktos]], [[Central Greece]], in [[1882]]. After his father's death, he moved with his family to [[Piraeus]]. He studied Law at the [[University of Athens]] but turned to news reporting instead.

He took part in the [[Balkan Wars]] of [[1912]] - [[1913]] both as a soldier and newspaper correspondent. Afterwards, he became a playwright with several theatrical plays to his credit. He also wrote the biographies of several heroes of the Greek [[War of Independence]] including [[Theodoros Kolokotronis]], [[Andreas Miaoulis]] and [[Grigoris Papaflessas]].

Melas was elected to the [[Academy of Athens]] in [[1935]]. In [[1959]], he served as its president.

He died on [[April 5]], [[1966]].
