'''Yiannis Papaspyrou''' was a [[Greeks|Greek]] economist and politician who also served as Mayor of [[Piraeus]].

Papaspyrou was born in [[Piraeus]] in October of [[1922]]. He was elected to the [[Piraeus]] City Council in [[1959]]. In [[1964]], he elected to the [[Hellenic Parliament]], under the banner of [[Centre Union]].

During the rule of the [[Junta]], Papaspyrou was arrested twice - in [[1967]] and in [[1968]] - and was exiled to [[Folegandros]], [[Tilos]] and Marakomi camp. He was released in [[1971]].

After the restoration of democracy to [[Greece]] in [[1974]], he became a founding member of the [[Panhellenic Socialist Movement]] (PASOK) and was once again elected, under its banner, to the [[Hellenic Parliament]].

Papaspyrou won the [[1982]] municipal election of [[Piraeus]] and served as the city's mayor until [[1986]].

He died on [[July 5]], [[2010]] at age 87.
