Papoulidis was born on [[April 10]], [[1968]] in [[Athens]]. He played as a defender for [[Panionios FC|Panionios]] professionally from [[1986]] until December [[1992]]. He also played for [[PAOK FC|PAOK]] in the second half of the [[1993 Football Championship]].

Internationally, he played for the Greek [[Under-19 National Football Team]] as well as the [[Under-21 National Football Team|Under-21 side]].

Yiannis Papoulidis is the son of the late [[Takis Papoulidis]], who played football for [[Panionios FC|Panionios]] and [[Panathinaikos FC|Panathinaikos]] in the [[1950s]] - [[1960s]] era.
