- January 22: Greece is recognised as an independent country by the London Protocol. The new state had a population of approximately 750,000 persons and consisted of Peloponnesus, Rumeli and the Cyclades islands. Two-thirds of all Greeks were left outside its borders.

- April 12: The Ottoman Empire accepts Greek independence.
