  • June 7: Opposition leader, Constantine Mitsotakis, demands the deportation of the Turkish Consul to Komotini for direct involvement in the last Greek elections.
  • June 18: Despite winning 44.25% of the national vote, New Democracy are unable to form a government thanks to the electoral law passed by the outgoing PASOK government.
  • June 26: In Zagreb, Greece lose the final of Eurobasket 1989 to Yugoslavia 98-77.

  • November 17: Riots take place in Athens on the 16th anniversary of the attack on the Athens Polytechnic Institute: One student is killed and dozens are injured as protesters sought to march on the embassy of the USA
  • November 23: The political parties of PASOK, New Democracy and Synaspismos agree to support Xenophon Zolotas for Prime Minister at head of a non-party administration until fresh elections could be held.
