Achilleas Karamanlis

Achilleas Karamanlis is a former Greek politician from Serres prefecture, Macedonia. He is the younger brother of the late statesman Constantine Karamanlis and the uncle of current PM Costas Karamanlis.

Karamanlis was born on December 27, 1929. He studied law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and economics at Cambridge. He entered politics in 1963, as a member of the Hellenic Parliament, under the banner of the National Radical Union. After the restoration of democracy to Greece in 1974, he was again elected to Parliament under the banner of New Democracy.

Karamanlis has served as Minister for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works (1991 - 1993) as well as administrator of PROPO - the Greek football predictions game. He resigned his post in Parliament and retired from politics on November 4, 2005.
