Dimitrios Athanasopoulos was an Athens, Greece builder whose heinous murder, on January 7, 1931 shocked all Greece.

Athanasopoulos was killed in his sleep by his wife, Foula Athanasopoulou, his mother-in-law, Artemis Kastrou and Dimitris Moskios, Artemis' nephew. The house maid was also involved.

After the killing took place, the foursome tried unsuccessfully to burn the corpse. When they failed, they decided to dismember it instead and toss the well-wrapped pieces into the Illisos River. The gruesome packages were discovered and the police were able to solve the crime (put the pieces together, so to speak).

This crime shocked Greece where it was considered the "crime of the century". It inspired Rebetiko composer Iakovos Montanaris' song "Villain Mother-in-law" with the verse "...poor Athanasopoulos, what fate awaited you...".
