George Provopoulos

George Provopoulos, born in 1950, a professor at the University of Athens, is the former vice chairman and managing director at Piraeus Bank. He has served as chief executive of Emporiki Bank, and was deputy governor of the Bank of Greece between 1990 and 1993.

Provopoulos notably led the sale in August 2006 of Greek state controlled banking group Emporiki SA to Credit Agricole.

On May 30, 2008, Greece's central bank nominated George Provopoulos as its new governor. Provopoulos will replace Nicholas Garganas, who will step down when his six-year term ends June 14. The government approved the nomination on June 11. Provopoulos also succeeded Garganas at the European Central Bank's (ECB) Governing Council.
