Georgios Ath. Souflias (1941) is a member of the Greek political party New Democracy and since 2003 Greek Minister for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works.

Born in 1941 in Agia Triada, Farsala, Larisa prefecture, he graduated in civil engineering and he successfully exercised the profession in Larisa from 1966 to 1974.

From 1974 to 1996 he an elected member of the Greek Parliament. He did not run in the 2000 elections, but was returned in the 2004 elections as a deputy at large with the party of New Democracy.

He was a candidate for the leadership of New Democracy in 1997. In February 1998 he left the party, returning at the invitation of the party president issued at the party's 5th Congress (30 March1 April 2001).

In May 1993 he was nominated emeritus professor of human studies of the Greek College of Boston, USA.

He is married to Marianna Koraka and he has two daughters, Olga and Ioanna.

Ministerial experience

Souflias is currently Greek Minister of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works.

His previous ministerial positions include:

  • Deputy Minister for Interior Affairs, 1977-1980
  • Deputy Minister for National Economy, 1980-1981
