Giovanni was the youngest son of Charles II "The Lame" d'Anjou, King of Naples and Maria Arpad Princess of Hungary. September 1313 he became Captain-General of Calabria. In 1315, he succeeded his brother Peter as Count of Gravina. (Peter was killed at the Battle of Montecatini).
