King Karanus (808- 778 BC) was the first king of ancient Macedon. King Karanus established his first kingdom at Aegae (modern Vergina).

Karanus is first mentioned by Theopombus. He is generally believed to have been a son of Temenus. After his father's death, he sought the crown of Argos but was defeated by his brothers. He then sought the advice of the Oracle at Delphi which advised him to establish his throne where there are many animals.

Karanus and his followers headed north. When he found a valley with many goats, he thought that the oracle's prophesy had been fulfilled so he established the city of Aegae - from the Greek word Αίξ (goat) - near modern-day Vergina.
