The National Herald (Greek Εθνικός Κήρυκας or, older form, Εθνικός Κήρυξ) is a Greek American newspaper, founded in 1915 and still in operation.

History

The National Herald was founded by Petros Totonis and commenced publication on April 2, 1915 as a Venizelist alternative to the conservative, monarchist Atlantis.

Totonis was succeeded in 1947 by Babis Marketos who published the newspaper until 1976. During his 30 years of service, Marketos established the National Herald as an important component of the Greek-American community in the US. He was succeeded as publisher by Gene Rossides the ex-collegiate athlete and Undersecretary of the Treasury under President Richard Nixon, who gave way three years later to Antonis Diamataris.

The newspaper has expanded from being a New York daily to US-wide distribution, with home distribution available in some New York and New England areas.

In 2004, the National Herald launched its internet version.

The National Herald has been in continuous publication longer than any other New York City newspaper other than the New York Times.
