- 1903:The theatrical play of The Oresteia by Aeschylus was performed for the first time translated in the dimotiki language. The events brought an uproar within "insulted" art circles. Fights erupted resulting in the death of two people and the injury of seven others.
- 1940: Lieutenant Alexandros Diakos became the first Greek Army officer to die in World War II.
- 1948: Archbishop Athenagoras was elected Ecumenical Patriarch.

- 1935: A referendum was held for the return of King George II to the throne in Greece. 97.8% voted for the return.
- 1963: Georgios Papandreou's political party, Center Union, emerged the winner in the national elections held, and formed a minority government with 42.2% of the votes.
- 1968: The funeral for Georgios Papandreou turned into a protest against the military government of Georgios Papadopoulos
- 1993: Constantine Mitsotakis resigned from the leadership of the New Democracy political party. Miltiades Evert was elected the new leader with 141 votes; 37 voted for Ioannis Varvitsiotis.

- 1821: The revolting Greeks prevailed over the Turkish forces at Chalandri and took over Athens.

- 1932: Panagis Tsaldaris was sworn in as Prime Minister after winning the September 26 elections with the Popular Party (Laiko Komma, Λαϊκό Κόμμα).

- 1821: First lord high commissioner of the Ionian Islands, Sir Thomas Maitland, expelled all Greek refugees to prevent residents of the islands from giving assistance to the Greek War of Independence.
- 1901: Students ransacked the offices of Athens daily "Acropolis" in protest over the newspaper's publication of the Bible translated into modern Greek. The events surrounding the Bible's translation in 1901 would go down in history as "Ta Evangelika".
- 1914 (NS): The British annexed Cyprus.
- 2007: A convoy of 14 Greek Police jeeps was fired upon with automatic weapons, as it attempted to enter the village of Zoniana, Crete.

- 1995: Greek police disarmed and arrested an Ethiopian who had hijacked an Olympic Airlines airplane, just before takeoff, and was holding a stewardess hostage.

- 1967: A Cypriot patrol, under General Georgios Grivas, was shot at while removing roadblocks around Kofinou. A battle ensued that nearly caused war between Greece and Turkey.
- 1983: The "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" was proclaimed in the occupied territories of the island. Only Turkey recognised this state.
- 1995: Inmates of Korydallos prison ended their uprising and released six hostages after their demands were approved by the Ministry of Justice.

- 1972: 44 persons died as the tanker "World Hero" collided with the Hellenic Navy vessel "Merlin" just 5 miles from the port of Piraeus.

- 1973: Tanks tore down the gates of the Polytechnic Institute in Athens ending the student protests against the military government of Greece. 16 students died during the confrontation.
- 1989: Riots took place in Athens on the 16th anniversary of the attack on the Athens Polytechnic Institute: One student was killed and dozens were injured as protesters sought to march on the embassy of the USA.

- 1958: The first game on grass in Leoforos Alexandras Stadium was played between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos. Olympiakos won 1-0 on a goal by Elias Yfantis.

- 1947: In a lavish wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, Princess Elizabeth married her distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten, a dashing former prince of Greece and Denmark who renounced his titles in order to marry the English princess.
- 1952: The house of writer Alexandros Papadiamantis in Skiathos became a museum.

- 1990: Businessman Vardis Vardinoyiannis escaped a rocket attack on his car by the Revolutionary Organisation 17 November.
- 1991: The European Parliament saluted the 2,500 anniversary of the birth of democracy in Greece.

- 1951: It was announced that the Prime Minister, general Nikolaos Plastiras, was seriously ill. Vice President Sophoklis Venizelos returned interrupting his official visit to the United States.
- 1995: A great day for Greece in the World Weightlifting championship games of China: Pyrros Dimas won 2 gold medals and set a world record, Kakhi Kakhiasvili won 2 gold medals and set 3 Greek records, Valerios Leonidis won 3 silver medals.

- 1901: The National Theater (Royal Theater at the time) was established on St. Constantine Street in Athens
- 1908: An unknown disease destroyed oak trees in Crete. Inhabitants performed a litany and brought the Holy Belt (Αγία Ζώνη) from Mount Athos (Άγιον Όρος) for that purpose.
- 1940: The Greek army liberated the town of Moschopolis (known in Albanian as Voskopoja and in Aromanian as Moscopole) of Northern Epirus (southern Albania) during the counter-offensive operations against the Italians in WWII
- 1953: Spiros Markezinis, unofficially the Finance Minister of the Alexandros Papagos government, announced that he will proceed with "cutting off three zeroes from the currency bills." The value of the drachma against the dollar becomes 1 to 30 and not 1 to 30,000 as it had been.
- 1996: Miss Hellas, Irene Skliva, was crowned Miss World.

- 1892: A young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin, first pitched his idea to revive the Olympic Games at a meeting of the Union des Sports Athlétiques in Paris.
- 1942: Guerrilas from both EDES and ELAS blew up the Gorgopotamos Bridge used by Germans to supply Gen. Rommel's Afrika Korps.
- 1949: The National Football Team of Greece defeated Syria 8-0 in their greatest win ever. Antonis Papantoniou (3), Angelos Vasiliadis (2), Kleanthis Maropoulos and Yiannis Nembidis (2) were the scorers.
- 1973: A coup was orchestrated by the head of the feared military police, Brigadier Dimitrios Ioannides which deposed the Greek Government - headed by self-appointed President George Papadopoulos - after weeks of unrest.

- 1999: Kakhi Kakhiasvili won 3 gold metals at 94 kg the World Weightlifting Championship games held in Athens.
- 2004: The relics of Saint Gregory Nazianzenus were returned to Constantinople by the Roman Catholic Church.

- 1910: Eleftherios Venizelos and his Liberal Party won 307 out of 362 seats in Parliament in a landslide victory.
- 1922: Five members of the Laiko Party - Dimitrios Gounaris, Nikolaos Stratos, Petros Protopapadakis, Nikolaos Theotokis, Georgios Baltatzis - as well as General Georgios Hadjanestis, were executed at Goudi, Athens, for their role in the Asia Minor disaster.
- 1955: EOKA member, Andreas Dimitriou, shot and injured a British Intelligence agent named Taylor. For the assault, Dimitriou would become, along with Michalis Karaolis, one of the first two Cypriots hanged by the British during the EOKA struggle.
- 2002: The European Court of Human Rights awarded a 13.7 million euro (4.6 billion drachmas) monetary compensation to the former King Constantine II and ruled against the Greek government for the seizure of the royal property.

- 1992: A new tax (Real Estate Tax) to be paid annually by owners of real estate properties was set by the government.
