Spyros Melas

Spyros Melas was a Greek writer, playwright, historian and member of the Academy of Athens.

Melas was born in Nafpaktos, Central Greece, in 1882. After his father's death, he moved with his family to Piraeus. He studied Law at the University of Athens but turned to news reporting instead.

He took part in the Balkan Wars of 1912 - 1913 both as a soldier and newspaper correspondent. Afterwards, he became a playwright with several theatrical plays to his credit. He also wrote the biographies of several heroes of the Greek War of Independence including Theodoros Kolokotronis, Andreas Miaoulis and Grigoris Papaflessas.

Melas was elected to the Academy of Athens in 1935. In 1959, he served as its president.

He died on April 5, 1966.
