Thanasis Kourkouvelas

Thanasis Kourkouvelas was a Greek football goalkeeper for Panionios and Olympiakos during the 1960s and 1970s.

Kourkouvelas was born in 1939 and is perhaps best remembered for his performance against Panathinaikos on May 28, 1966: Panathinaikos were 1 point ahead of their bitter rivals Olympiakos, with 4 games to go and were poised to take another championship. They played an indifferent Panionios on that day and found themselves down 2-1. Despite the enormous pressure placed upon him, Kourkouvelas preserved Panionios' victory and gifted Olympiakos their first league title in 7 years.

Kourkouvelas came to play for Olympiakos during the 1971 season though the red-and-whites had been after him for years.

Kourkouvelas was capped once by the Greek National Football Team, in a friendly against Libya, as a second-half substitute for Takis Economopoulos.
