Yiannis Sideris was born in Athens in 1898. He studied Phililogy at the University of Athens and served for nearly 30 years as a philology professor in mid-level education (High schools and Lyceums).

He is considered the greatest historian of the Greek theatre. His studies and writings are often found to be the only source of information on many theatre-related subjects. In addition, he established a theatrical museum which he headed until his death, on December 23, 1975.
