Elafonissos is a small, inhabited Greek island off the coast of SE Peloponnesus. It belongs administratively to Laconia prefecture.
Elafonissos has an area of 19 square miles and a population of 745 inhabitants according to the 2001 Census. It is located less than half a mile off the coast of Laconia. In antiquity, it was a peninsula and was described as such by Pausanias in his travels.
Elafonissos attracts many tourists during the summer months due to its long clear beaches. Besides tourism, the islanders also earn their living from fishing.
Elafonissos ("Deer Island") owes its name to the many deers that inhabited the island during antiquity.
