According to the Old Testament (Genesis 10), Javan is the ancestor of the Greeks. He is described as a son - which could also mean "descendant" - of Japheth the ancestor of the Indo-Europeans.
Descendants mentioned in Genesis 10 are: Elishah, Tarshish (Spain), Kittim (Cyprus) and Rodanim.
