Stateira I was wife of Darius III of Persia of the Achaemenid dynasty. She was known as the "most beautiful woman in the Earth". She was captured by Alexander the Great after the Battle of Issus, 333 BC. She died giving birth or through illness, still in captivity. Some sources suggest the father of the child might be a man other than Darius, perhaps even Alexander. Stateira I was mother of Stateira II.
