Archdeacon, in the Eastern Orthodox Church, is an honorary title bestowed on certain deacons - the lowest rank of clergy. Usually, the title is bestowed on a deacon who assists a Metropolitan, or even a simple bishop.
In older days, Archdeacons had several administrative duties but nowadays only the Grand Archdeacon at the Patriarchate of Constantinople retains such duties.
