Kynouria Province occupies the eastern part of Arcadia prefecture in the Peloponnese. Its capital is Leonidio in Tsakonia - the southern part of the province. The major town of northern Kynouria is Astros where the National Council convened during the Greek War of Independence.
In the southern part of the province, the Tsakonian dialect is spoken which is derived from the Doric dialect of ancient Greek.
