Fani Palli-Petralia, aka Fani Petralia-Palli, is a Greek politician.
Palli-Petralia was born in Athens, in 1943, to a family descended from Divri, Elis prefecture. Her father, Epaminondas Petralias, was an athlete and a member of the International Olympic Committee. She studied Law at the University of Athens Law School and is by profession a lawyer.
Palli-Petralia was first elected to the Hellenic Parliament in 1985, under the banner of New Democracy. She has continually been reelected since.
In 1990 Palli-Petralia headed Athens' candidacy committee for the 1996 Olympics, which were ultimately awarded to Atlanta by the International Olympic Committee.
In July 1999, she was voted president of the European Union of Women and in September 2002, president of the International Democratic Union of Women.
She held the posts of Deputy Sports Minister (1990-1991), Deputy Health Minister (1992-1993) and Alternate Minister of Culture (2004-2006).
From February 2006 until September 2007, Palli-Petralia served as Minister for Tourism.
On December 17, 2007, she was appointed Minister for Employment and Social Protection following the resignation of Vasilis Manginas.
Palli-Petralia is a member of the Greek Olympic Committee since 2001.
Personal
Fani Palli-Petralia is married to Nikos Pallis. The couple have four children and eleven grandchildren.
