Yiannis Vartholomeos was the head of the Social Insurance Institute (IKA) from 2004 - Feb. 2007, and was a senior member of Greece's governing conservative party, New Democracy.
He was an economics professor at the University of Piraeus, and formerly had served as a senior economic adviser to the government.
The body of Yiannis Vartholomeos was found February 9, 2007 in the stairwell of an apartment block in the central Zografou area. He was killed by multiple blows to the head with a marble object, coroners said Saturday, confirming police suspicions of a murder.
