Zachos Hadjifotiou was born in the Plaka area of Athens. He grew up, as he says, in a city that resembled a stage set. He attended the Makris School in Athens and the Anarghyrios School in Spetses, before graduating from the Experimental School. At the age of 17, when the Germans invaded Greece, he fled to the Middle East and fought in Africa at Tobruk and El Alamein, and in Italy with the Rimini Brigade. He was awarded was awarded five war medals
Back in Greece, he got involved in the family business - though not for long, because he left for France and stayed there eight years. In Greece once more, he began writing for the "Kathimerini" newspaper published by Eleni Vlachou, with whom he enjoyed a long friendship.
At the same time he contributed to "Taxydromos" and "Ta Nea", a cooperation that lasted for about ten years. He also wrote regular columns for "Apogevmatini" and "Eleftheros Typos" for many years.
He has published 15 books, of which four have had record sales. He has also written lyrics for the music of Xarchakos and Zambetas, theatrical plays, and has translated and adapted plays which enjoyed successful runs on stage.
He worked on television for twenty-three years and became a celebrity through his own show, "Five Minutes with Zachos Hadjifotiou".
Zachos Hadjifotiou had a three-and-a-half year marriage to the great actress Jenny Karezi.
