Born April 20, 1944, Yiannis Gaitatzis after starting his football career with Orpheas Xanthi joined Olympiakos at the age of 19. He went on to stay with the Piraeus team for 15 seasons. He went on to hold the record of appearances in for A Division games (346 games) until the year 2000 when he was surpassed by Kyriakos Karataidis. He retired from professional football playing at age 34.
He then went on to work as coach with an abundance of teams: Panafpliakos, Panargiakos, Thiva, Sparta, Olympiakos Volos, Rhodes, Lamia, Panalefsiniakos, Acharnaikos and Ethnikos Piraeus.
