Panagis Tsaldaris

(Greek: Παναγής Τσαλδάρης) Greek politician born in Corinthia prefecture in 1868. He studied law in Athens, Germany and France and entered politics, in 1910, on the anti-venizelist side, when he was first elected to Parliament. Served under Dimitrios Gounaris as Justice Minister in 1915 and, between 1920 - 1922, as Interior Minister and Transportation Minister. Became leader of the Popular (Laiko Party) after Gounaris' execution. Became Prime Minister in 1933 and again in 1935 but his government was brought down by Royalist elements seeking the return of George II as king of Greece. In 1936 he won the elections but without a strong enough majority to form a government. He voted against the government that was formed by Ioannis Metaxas who later that year (August 4) formed a dictatorship. Tsaldaris passed away in 1936.
