George Provopoulos, born in 1950, a professor at the University of Athens, is the former vice chairman and managing director at Piraeus Bank. He has served as chief executive of Emporiki Bank, and was deputy governor of the Bank of Greece between 1990 and 1993.
On May 30, 2008, Greece's central bank nominated George Provopoulos on Friday as its new governor. Provopoulos will replace Nicholas Garganas, who will step down when his six-year term ends June 14.
The Bank of Greece's nomination has to be approved by the government and Parliament.
