Basil I was Patriarch of Constantinople from 970 until 974.
Before succeeding Polyeuctus as Patriarch, in 970, Basil was a monk. He continued leading an ascetic life even after his election.
In 974, he was accused by clergymen of conspiring against the emperor. Basil refused to appear before the imperial court and demanded that a synod be called to hear the accusations against him. He was removed from office and exiled to a monastery near Scamandros.
