- 1935: A Venizelist coup d'etat failed. Eleftherios Venizelos fled to Italy.
- 1952: Nikos Beloyiannis was sentenced to death by a military tribunal.
- 1959: After three years of exile, Archbishop Makarios III returned to Cyprus to an unprecedented welcome: Nearly two-thirds of all adult Cypriots turned out to greet him.
