Maximus V was Patriarch of Constantinople from February 20, 1946 until October 19, 1948.
Maximus was born on October 26, 1897 in Sinope on the Black Sea. His surname in the world was Vaportzis. He studied at the Chalki Seminary and was ordained a deacon in 1918 and a priest in 1928.
In 1930, he was elected Metropolitan of Philadelphia and, two years later, Metropolitan of Chalkidon.
In 1946 he was elected Ecumenical Patriarch however, due to stress-related health problems, he was forced to resign in October of 1948. Maximus maintained good relations with the Patriarchate of Moscow and many still believe that his resignation was actually due to political reasons, given the Cold War situation at that time.
Maximus died in Switzerland on January 1, 1972, from bronchial pneumonia and was buried at the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi in Balikli, Constantinople.
