Taksim is a Turkish word meaning to distribute. It has been used since the 1950s as a rallying cry by the Turkish Cypriot community to describe the partition of Cyprus into Turkish and Greek sectors (Greek διχοτόμησις).
Taksim is also a square in the Beyoglu section of Istanbul. The reason it was thus named, is that in the earlier times, drinking water was distributed there to the locals.
Taksim is also the name of a musical bouzouki masterpiece by Yiannis Papaioannou.
