Theophylactus was Patriarch of Constantinople from 933 until 956.
Theophylactus was born in 917, the son of Byzantine emperor Romanus Lecapenus. On February 2, 933, at age 16, he was promoted to the throne of Saint Andrew by his father who thus sought to have complete control over the Church.
Theophylactus did not live the life of a clergyman - let alone a Patriarch - as he continued his life of breeding and racing horses and hunting.
He died on February 27, 956, after he fell off his horse, and was succeeded by Polyeuctus, a monk with traditional views and values.
