532: The Nika riots break out in Constantinople. The two dominant chariot-racing factions, the Greens and the Blues, stir up the mob to riot against emperor Justinian I. The rioting and destruction continues throughout the week. Finally, Justinian decides to strike ruthlessly and the revolt ends with a bloodbath in the Hippodrome (30.000 dead approximately)
1801: The flag of the "Independent State of the Ionian Islands" is raised in Corfu.
1955: The sailboat "Agios Georgios" transports weapons and ammunition from mainland Greece to Paphos, Cyprus in preparation for the EOKA struggle.
1963: A mudslide kills 13 persons in Mikro Chorio, Evritania prefecture.
1974: Metropolitan Serafim of Ioannina is elected Archbishop of Athens and all Greece.

1895: First session of the Olympic Games Organizing Committee, presided by Prince Constantine (Ioannis Fokianos, vice president). One of the main issues is fund raising. George Averoff offers the biggest donation, 920.000 golden drachmas, for the restoration of Panathinaikon Stadium.
1941: Anton Christoforidis defeats Melio Bettina, in Cleveland, Ohio, by unanimous decision to win the National Boxing Association light heavyweight title.
1991: The AEK- Olympiakos derby is interrupted five minutes before the end (1-2) when violent riots break out. Outside the Philadelphia stadium a young fan is killed from a fire cracker. The match is repeated in Rhodes one month later and AEK win by 1-0 (Batista).
