Syros (Greek: Σύρος), or Siros is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea. The island features towns including Ermoupolis and Ano Syros. Ermoupolis (as well as the island itself) is considered the "capital" of the Cyclades, and always had been a significant port town, during the past century more significant than Piraeus.

Demographics

Because of the Venetian domination from the Middle Ages onwards, the islanders used to be exclusively Roman Catholic. However, due to immigration from other islands, Catholics now constitute some 40% of the population.
