1821: Archbishop Kyprianos of Cyprus is hanged by the Turks in an attempt to intimidate the Cypriots from joining the Greek Revolution. The bishops of Paphos, Kition and Kyrenia and 470 other important Cypriots are also executed.
1824: During the Greek War of Independence, Chrysanthus becomes Ecumenical Patriarch.
1832: The Treaty of London is signed.
1863: Reform-minded clergymen and laics have Ecumenical Patriarch Joachim II removed from office.
1906: Metropolitan Photius of Korytsa is murdered during the Macedonian Struggle.
1920: The Greeks take Bursa during the first Greek offensive of the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922)
1956: A major earthquake (7.3 on the Richter scale) strikes Santorini resulting in 53 deaths and more than 100 injuries.

1999: Nikos Kaklamanakis wins the silver medal at the World Mistral Championship in Belgium.
2000: Alexandros Papadimitriou become the first Greek hammer thrower to break the 80m barrier (80.45m).
2000: Greek-American Pete Sampras wins Wimbledon and sets a new record with 13 Grand Slam titles.
