768: Patriarch Constantine II is beheaded on orders from Byzantine emperor Constantine V "Copronymus".
1924: Andreas Michalakopoulos forms a government.
1944: 300 Greek Jews lead 150 others in a revolt at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Nearly all are killed in the ensuing fight against the German guards.
1944: The first British troops land in the Peloponnese.
1959: Archbishop Makarios III and Georgios Grivas meet in Rhodes and sign a cooperation agreement.
1973: An unsuccessful attempt is made on the life of Cyprus President Makarios III: a bomb explodes prematurely on the road he was scheduled to travel.
1997: ENIC acquires ownership of AEK FC.
2000: Tasos Papadopoulos succeeds Spyros Kyprianou as leader of the Democratic Party of Cyprus.
2004: A bomb explodes at the Patriarchate of Constantinople damaging the church of St George

2006: Cyprus triumph over the Republic of Ireland 5-2 as Michalis Konstantinou and Kostas Charalambidis score two goals each.
