Amiras

Amiras (Greek Αμιράς) is a town in the municipality of Viannos, Heraklio prefecture, Crete, Greece.

The population of Amiras, according to the 2001 census, was 353 inhabitants.

The name Amiras is derived from the Arabic amir or emir - ruler. The town was probably built and named during the period of Arab rule in Crete.

In September 1943, 114 of its inhabitants were executed by the German occupation forces in retaliation for the death of 84 of their soldiers nearby. A monument in the town commemorates the memory of those who were executed.
