Actaeus was the mythological ruler of Attica before Cecrops. He is credited with naming Attica which evolved from Actaea to Actica to Attica.

Actaeus had a daughter, Agraulos, who was given in marriage to Cecrops. Cecrops then succeeded Actaeus, who had no sons, as King of Athens.

In Greek Mythology there was another Actaeus who was a hunter and who had the misfortune of seeing Artemis nude.
