Lefkada city is the capital of the prefecture of Lefkada in the Ionian Islands. Located on the north side of the island, roughly 20 minutes from Preveza Airport, it is built on the site of ancient Lefkada.

The architecture of Lefkada's houses show the influence of the Venetians, modified to cope with the constant threat of earthquakes. One such major earthquake, in 1948, destroyed the city.

Lefkada has an archaeological museum, an ethnographic museum, two main libraries, the castle of Agia Mavra, built in the 14th Century, a park full of busts of many a poet, many churches and quaint old buildings.

Lefkada was the first city in all Greece to have its own philharmonic orchestra.

Population

The population of the city itself, according to the 2001 census, is 7,548. The population of the municipality is 10,875.
