Spatharios (Greek Σπαθάριος) is a title used mostly in the Byzantine period of Greek history.
As a Military Rank
Spatharios was a Byzantine military rank meaning the "Sword-bearer".
The "sword-bearers" (Greek plural: Σπαθάριοι), were (allegedly) members of a special Imperial guard. Their leader was called Protospatharios (Greek: Πρωτοσπαθάριος).
By the end of the 12th century, the title disappeared possibly due to changes in weapons used.
As an Honorary Title
The word "Protospatharios" was also used as a title awarded to senior officials and army commanders.
