The isle was one of the outposts of political prisoners during the [[1930s]]. In [[1968]] an earthquake demolished most of the houses, which were replaced by concrete prefabricated buildings laid out in a military-like camp formation. Nonetheless, the isle retains a very attractive homonymous settlement being the capital, while preserving a rather unspoiled mediterranean environment with pristine beaches. It is mostly a place for relaxation and meditation.

Dimitris Grammozis is a Greek-German football defensive midfielder.

Grammozis was born on July 8, 1978, in Wuppertal, Germany, to Greek parents. He started his football career in 1995 with KFC Uerdingen and has played with Hamburg SV (1999-2000), FC Kaiserslautern (2001-2005) and FC Koln (2006).

On July 2006, Grammozis negotiated with AE Larisa but instead chose to sign with Rot-Weiss Essen. He will be playing the 2008 season for Ergotelis, having signed a 2-year deal with the Cretan club.
