"Kapetan" Tellos Agras was a Greek military figure during the Struggle for Macedonia, which pitted Greeks not only against the Ottoman rulers of Macedonia but also the Bulgarian guerrilas who sought to annex the region to Bulgaria.
Agras was born Sarantis Agapinos in Gargalianoi, Messinia in 1880. At the time of the Struggle for Macedonia, he was a lieutenant in the Greek Army. He crossed over the border into Macedonia in 1906 as head of a band of guerrilas and fought in the swamps of Giannitsa. In November of the same year he was wounded but, after his recovery, he returned to fight in the the swamps.
On June 5, 1907, the Bulgarian guerrila leader Zlatan invited him to Naoussa to negotiate but, instead, captured him and had him hanged near Edessa in the village that now bears his name.
Agras' men took vengeance on Zlatan a few days later, killing him, in broad daylight, in the market of Naoussa.
