412 BC: Athens and Sparta agree to a truce during the Peloponnesian War. This, so-called "Peace of Nicias" will only last six years.
1825: A force of 6,000 Turks under Kutahye begins the second siege of Messolonghi.
1827: Richard Church is made commander of the Greek revolutionary forces.
1850: The Pacifico incident ends after the intervention of France and Russia.
1896: Closing ceremony of the first modern Olympic Games.
1939: Archaeological digs bring to light a palace in ancient Pylos, possibly that of Trojan War hero King Nestor.
1948: The Greek A Army Corps, under Gen Thrasyvoulos Tsakalotos, conducts a mop-up operation, throughout Central Greece, against the Democratic Army of Greece, during the Greek Civil War. This operation was codenamed "Dawn".
1951: Conservatives win the mayoral elections in Athens, Thessaloniki and Piraeus.

1987: Greek-American baseball executive, Al Campanis, is forced to resign as his remarks that blacks don't make great swimmers is taken to be racist.
1993: Businessman Socrates Kokkalis takes over as President of Olympiakos.
