1823: Cretans battle with Turks at Amourgeles during the Greek War of Independence.

2003: The president of Panellinios GC Minos Kiriakou becomes the first Greek to be elected in the IAAF Council
2009: Eleni Artymata becomes the first Cypriot woman to qualify for the finals of the World Championships in athletics. She did so in the 200m with a time of 22.64 - a new Cypriot record.
