Vasilis Lymperis (alt. spellings: Lyberis or Liberis) has gone down in history as the last person executed in Greece, on August 25, 1972.

Lymperis was a 27-year old electrician when he was sentenced to death on May 7, 1972 for the murder of his estranged wife, mother-in-law and two kids. According to the prosecution, he set ablaze his house at Metamorphosis Chalandri, dousing the premises with gasoline and torching the place in wee hours of January 5, 1972, while his family members were asleep.

According to Lymperis, his relationship with his wife was strained and he blamed his mother-in-law for that. His defense pleaded insanity. He also claimed that he did not know that his kids were in the house that fatefull night. While addressing the court he allegedly said: If you don't believe me, execute me this very moment!

They eventually did.
