Methodius I was Patriarch of Constantinople from March 4, 843 until his death on June 14, 847.
Methodius was born in Syracuse, Sicily. He lived at the time of the great issue over the veneration of icons in the church. He sided with the iconophiles in the dispute and was imprisoned for his views.
Appointed Patriarch by the empress Theodora, Methodius reinstated the icons in Hagia Sophia and the rest of the churches and monasteries of the Byzantine Empire.
After his death, he was canonised a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church. His memory is celebrated on June 14.
