1570: Nicosia falls to the Turks in an orgy of slaughter. Roughly 20,000 of its inhabitants were put to the sword.
1667: Clement becomes Patriarch of Constantinople.
1922: Turkish troops enter Smyrna.
1941: The resistance movement EDES is founded in Athens by venizelist Col. Napoleon Zervas.
1951: Gen. Alexandros Papagos wins a small plurality (36.5%) in the general elections but is unable to form a government.
1967: Greek PM Konstantinos Kollias and Turkish PM Suleyman Demirel meet at Kesan, Eastern Thrace, Turkey.
1970: Two Arabs, in possession of explosives, are arrested in Athens.
1993: The government of Constantine Mitsotakis collapses after the defection of four MPs.
1996: The government of Cyprus publishes evidence that Solomos Solomou was shot dead by Kenan Akin, "minister of agriculture" of the so-called Turkish Republic of N. Cyprus.
2005: Vladimir Putin becomes the first Russian state leader to visit Mount Athos.

1961: AEK kick off the 1961-1962 season with an 8-0 away win at Aegaleo. Kostas Nestoridis scores three goals, Andreas Stamatiadis and Thanasis Gouvas two each, with Giorgos Petridis contributing one.
1982: Anna Verouli wins gold at the European Games of Athens with a javelin throw of 70.02m
1990: Greek-American Pete Sampras wins his first Grand Slam title after defeating Andre Agassi at the US Open.
