1849: 40 Greeks are hanged by the British in Kefallonia for the revolt of August 19, 1849.
1866: The Cretan revolt of 1866 - 1869 commences.
1958: The Battle of Liopetri takes place; four EOKA members - Fotis Pittas, Andreas Karios, Christos Samaras and Elias Papakyriakou are killed.
1976: ET3 broadcasts for the first time through an antenna which is set on the Kiosk 8 of the International Thessaloniki Fair with Terence Quick being in the studios
1999: A friendly match is held between PAOK and Galatasaray at Toumba Stadium to raise money for the people struck by earthquake in Turkey.

1937: Baron Pierre de Coubertin, born in Paris on January 1, 1863, dies of a heart attack in Lausanne aged 74. De Coubertin dedicated his life and fortune to the revival of the Olympic Games and composed the Olympic Oath.
1966: Christos Papanikolaou wins the silver medal (5.05m) in pole vault at the European Championships in Budapest. East German Wolfgang Nordwig, his worthy opponent in many major competitions, wins the gold medal (5.10m)
1972: Stavros Tziortzis finishes 6th in 400m hurdles (49.7) at the Munich Olympics. John Akii-Bua from Uganda wins the race setting new world record with 47.8.
