  • 1937: Baron Pierre de Coubertin, born in Paris on January 1, 1863, dies of a heart attack in Lausanne aged 74. De Coubertin dedicated his life and fortune to the revival of the Olympic Games and composed the Olympic Oath.
  • 1966: Christos Papanikolaou wins the silver medal (5.05m) in pole vault at the European Championships in Budapest. East German Wolfgang Nordwig, his worthy opponent in many major competitions, wins the gold medal (5.10m)
  • 1972: Stavros Tziortzis finishes 6th in 400m hurdles (49.7) at the Munich Olympics. John Akii-Bua from Uganda wins the race setting new world record with 47.8.
