1827: The Battle of Navarino takes place; the Egyptian fleet is destroyed.
1839: Priest-philosopher, Theophilos Kairis, testifies before the Holy Synod concerning his teachings of "Theosebism".
1888: The Zappeion opens in Athens.
1901: Daily "Acropolis" finishes its publication of the Bible, translated into Modern Greek.
1912: The Battle of Giannitsa takes place during the First Balkan War.
1922: The peace conference which eventually produces the Treaty of Lausanne, commences.
1944: Joseph Stalin and Sir Winston Churchill partition eastern Europe into "spheres of influence". Greece is marked as 90% under British and only 10% under Soviet influence.
1950: Bishop Makarios of Kition is elected Archbishop of Cyprus.
1961: Dr. Fazil Kucuk vetoes the creation of a single Cypriot army.
1968: Aristotle Onassis marries Jackie Kennedy at island of Skorpios.
1988: George Koskotas, banker, publisher and team owner (Olympiakos) is indicted on fraud and embezzlement charges.
2010: The Supreme Court acquitted ex-Prime Ministers Petros Protopapadakis, Nikolaos Stratos and Dimitrios Gounaris and three others, all convicted of high treason and executed in 1922 for their role in the Asia Minor disaster.

1963: Olympiakos defeat Zaglebie Sosnowiec of Poland 2-0 in Vienna for the Cupwinners' Cup and become the first club from Greece to advance to the next round of a European Cup.
1997: Dimitris Saravakos plays his last game for Panathinaikos: a 4-1 victory over Athinaikos FC.
